Tuesday Tip: Prime Your Armani Foundation

I've always been a huge fan of Smashbox Photo Finish Primer and will continue using it with my Make Up For Ever foundation when I do makeup for events. On myself I've always used Armani foundation...well, not always, just since I worked there in 2006. If you've read my blog for more than a minute you know one of my favorite brands is Giorgio Armani. The reason I don't use their foundation when I do event makeup is because it can shift and isn't waterproof. Make Up For Ever is hard to beat when it comes to longwear.

Well, on my last trip to Dallas I stopped by Neiman Marcus to purchase Luminous Silk Foundation in #4 (my winter color which is the time of the year I embrace my Snow White complex). They were having a special where I could get my foundation, a new blender brush and the foundation primer (Fluid Master Primer) along with a couple of samples for $125 (it was a $190 value). I know that is a lot of money for makeup, but it was a steal for Armani since their foundation alone runs around $60. I indulged knowing that sets and good deals like that are hard to come by at the Armani counter.

Can I just say I am SO pleased with my purchase! The way to wear Luminous Silk Foundation is with Fluid Master Primer! My makeup is sitting better on my face and lasting longer. So, I realize not all of you wear Armani makeup, but for those of you who do start using their primer if you don't already. If you click on the Neiman Marcus link you can go to the exact set I purchased. And for the rest of you, find a primer that works for you...Smashbox, Laura Mercier, MAC and many other lines offer them. They can do everything from change your skin coloring to balance your skin from oily to normal or simply make your makeup last longer....all of those sound good to me!

Makeup Montage is Back!

Good news--I am officially back to blogging. To my loyal readers, I've missed you and writing about all things makeup. I have had a few busy months, and have decided to fill you in on seven major things that happened while I've been away from my blog:

1. I got engaged in early October to T- an amazing man, and have been busy planning our wedding that will be next summer

2. I was maid of honor in October for my friend T, a childhood friend, here is a picture of me and the beautiful bride (I did her makeup)

3. I went to Dallas twice, both times eating at fun places, a couple of them I'd go to again are: Mi Cocina and The Porch

4. Indulged in Sprinkles (the best cupcakes EVER, which makes it a major event!)

5. I was maid of honor for another childhood friend, S, in November, here is a picture of me and the glamourous bride (I did her makeup too)

6. I purchased some awesome makeup- more to come in the next couple of weeks on what I found

7. I did makeup for many fabulous return clients- Homecoming, weddings, and photo shoots....I have SUCH a fun job!

Don't forget, I'm giving away a $15 Sephora giftcard once I have 50 followers, you must comment to be entered in the drawing!

Tuesday Tip: Amazing Aveeno

I love trips to Ulta because it is such a one stop shop! On Saturday (thanks to a giftcard from a friend) I spent some time in Ulta finding great new products, and purchasing some old favorites to replace what has been used up. I stocked up on my favorite eye makeup remover (one for my kit and one for me), Neutrogena. I bought one of the fabulous Essie fall shades I recently blogged about...the color is a great rust called Very Structured. Of course the amount of nail polishing I do requires Nail polish remover. Then I was off to moisturizers since my Kiel's is about to run dry and I wanted a quick fix. I found myself in front of Aveeno, partially because I have another friend who I did makeup with in California who swears by it and because it was buy one get the second half off. So, for around 20 some dollars I got their positively radiant daily moisturizer (with SPF 15- a must!), and also smart essentials nighttime moisturizer. The daytime moisturizer is user friendly with a pump, goes on smooth and feels lightweight...it also has the faintest smell of sunscreen, which reminds me of the beach so I'm loving it. The nighttime moisturizer feels rich on my skin and I woke up still feeling moisturized, it has a light almost floral smell (I'm not a floral scent person and it doesn't bug me).

I couldn't be happier with my new products and the fact that I found great deals, had a $3.50 off coupon and got a free pack of 200 cotton squares since I'm in their rewards program....thanks Ulta!!

Tuesday Tip: Know About Nars

I'm not only a fan of Nars because of their amazing color range, but also the fact that their colors are pigmented....that's right, when you put on their eyeshadow or blush you actually see the color without having to use a ton of product! They have great new colors for the fall including a new duo eyeshadow with plum and a dusty rose. Also check out their nail colors, or look for something similar at your local drug store...we are talking chocolate, plum, gray and taupe for fall....I LOVE it! The colors make me think of an argyle sweater, which is oh so fall!

Tuesday Tip: Nice Nails

How does Essie always draw me in with each new color collection?! I am adoring their new fall collection with colors that really represent fall....muted tones, a rust color, charcoal, and of course a deep dark plum. These colors are retro and fall at the same time, be sure to get one or find something similar at your local drug store!

Tuesday Tip: Try New Eyeshadow

Do you tend to wear the exact same eyeshadow everyday? If you answered yes then it's time to change it up...you can go out and get all new colors, or just change one color in your daily routine. For example, if you usually use a matte cream color as a highlight or base try something with a shimmer. If you usually use a light brown for your contour switch to a red brown or a brown with a sheen to it. While I don't recommend using all shimmer shadows unless you are in your teens, twenties or going to an event you can still mix in a little shimmer.

When it comes to great shadows that are pigmented and have a great sheen Stila is the answer. A few favorite colors of mine: go lightly, kitten, starlight, barefoot contessa, twig, poise, and coco.

If you don't want to buy an individual eyeshadow Stila offers lots of super cute pallates with great colors. An added bonus is that if you sign up for the newsletter on Stila's website you will get 20% off your next purchase....eyeshadows anyone??!

Tuesday Tip: Terrific Tweezers

I realized today that I haven't shared with all of you my favorite tweezers....you've probably heard of Tweezerman products and that their tweezers are the best, well, it's true! I got hooked on this product when I first started doing makeup. They were a suggested product on my supplies list for makeup school and I figured they had to be great since my instructor and others at the school recommended them...after actually using them on my clients and on my own brows I saw how GREAT they are. These tweezers in many makeup artists' kits....which means they are a product for the pros, and one you can own and use everyday. Their most popular design is the slanted tweezer. I LOVE that there are so many designs and colors offered (why should tweezers be boring, right?!), and while you may think $25 is a lot for tweezers you can know that they will last. You can mail them in to be sharpened for FREE and they can be repaired for $5 (all of this info is on their fabulous website).

Whether you just need new tweezers, travel size tweezers or a brow kit Tweezerman is where you should look. You can easily find this product at Sephora, Ulta, or drug stores.

Quick tip: if you tweeze your own brows remember to step away from the mirror from time to time so you can look at yourself from afar, this will help you avoid ending up with super thin brows that need to be penciled in...and remember less is more, tweeze a few hairs at a time, don't overdo it.

Tuesday Tip: Spread the Word

It's hot outside so I want to give you a reason to shop...in an air conditioned place with makeup. I am going to do a giveaway of a gift card in the amount of $15 to the winner's choice of Ulta or Sephora. Here are the two components that will make the drawing happen....

1. Spread the word about my blog to your friends. I will not do the drawing until I have 50 followers...I'm at 32 as of now, so I don't think I'm asking for too much :)

2. Comment on a blog post from today forward...only people who comment will be entered for the drawing.

Once I reach 50 followers I will enter the names of people who commented into random.org (in the order they comment in) and I will let random.org select a winner. Then the winner will just have to let me know where they would like to shop within 48 hours of me announcing the winner, which means you will need to check my blog. Let's see how quickly I can give away a gift card!

Tuesday Tip: Watch Out for This Heat

With these extreme summer temperatures now is not the time to leave your makeup in your hot car...not only will annoying things happen, like lipstick melting and concealer oozing out of the tube. Your foundation and concealer can go bad if you leave it in extreme heat enough times. So, if you take your makeup with you during the day carry a purse or bag big enough to throw it in there so it can stay in air conditioning. Makeup is something that you don't want to go to waste, replacing it is costly and inconveinent.

Need a fun way to keep cool this summer? Try this fun tip that I did when working at Armani Cosmetics: Put your toner over ice (or in the fridge for awhile if you are at home), when you use it you will feel extra refreshed!

Tuesday Tip: Shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Every year, in July to be exact, Nordstrom has their Anniversary Sale. This is a sale like no other...their brand new fall merchandise is marked down for two weeks and then the prices go up on August first. You can find boots for fall, cute tops, jeans, accessories and more for great prices. One of my favorite things to check out during the sale are all of the beauty products. Most lines launch a limited edition item or set for the sale. Other lines pull their best selling products and put them in a set together...this is a GREAT time to buy products you love at a marked down price, or try something new.

A few of the sets I'm loving are:

Bobbi Brown 'Tortoise Shell Beauty Kit: this set includes a shimmer brick and gel liner (two products I mention here and use often) in addition to other great items

Kiehl's Powerful Moisture Restoring Set: This set has five items, two are favorites of mine, Avacado Eye Cream and Ultra Facial Cream. It is a $116 value and is only $76 during the sale.

Estee Lauder's free gift with purchase is full of products you will actually use and the bag they are in is adorable! The gift with either eye shadows or blush (and other fun things) is yours with a $35 purchase.

Tuesday Tip: Add Some Volume

I've tried many products on my hair to add more volume (including lots of teasing and hairspray) and it wasn't until I started using volumizing shampoo and conditioner that I really got results. So, if your hairspray, gel, mousse, etc isn't doing the trick try one of these products that I love.

Big and Sexy Big Volume Shampoo and Conditioner

This product adds volume and smells great...the first time I tried it I got the travel size at Ulta which is convienent....I love great travel size products, and I like getting sample sizes of products the first time I use them so that I can try them out.

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner

This product really adds a lot of volume to your roots. I don't love it for everyday use, but for every few days or using it on the day of an event you want volume for it is awesome! And good news, Bumble and Bumble is sold at Sephora now in addition to select salons.

Tuesday Tip: Be Patriotic

In honor of the Fourth of July (one of my favorite holidays) being yesterday, I have for you my favorite red, white and blue products. There are so many things I love about July...the intense heat, the season, having barbeque's and going to the beach...why not celebrate the Fourth of July all through the wonderful month of July?!

Red:

There's nothing better than a fabulous shade of true red lipstick...while there are many out there one that has been worn by celebs and looks awesome on is
MAC's Russian Red. Remember to line your lips (I prefer to use a neutral color) so that your rockin red lipstick doesn't go anywhere!

Pair that lipstick with these adorable
red shoes...I definitely can't resist red pumps.

White:

When it comes to white what else can I talk about but my Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream?! I'm such a fan of Kiehl's. This face cream is light enough for daytime use, but rich enough for night time...I really couldn't live without it!

Once you've applied your moisturizer and fabulous makeup you are going to need some amazing accessories. When it comes to accessories there are two items I am obsessed with...scarves and watches. I got my white Michael Kors watch a couple of years ago and it is still one of my favorites. Whether you choose a bulky watch (like mine) or a thin band,
Michael Kors, Fossil, or ToyWatch a white watch during the summer is a must. You can pair it with a casual sporty look to dress your outfit up, or wear it with the perfect summer dress for night time.

Blue:

Blue nail polish, whether dark like
OPI's Russian Navy, or light like Essie's barbados blue can be so fun during the summer. If you feel a little silly with it on your fingernails just use it on your toes...remember with dark colors or fun colors like blue sport it on shorter nails.

What would go better with blue nails than a fabulous pair of blue jeans...since jeans are another obsession here are some of my favorite brands that you should check out the next time you are at the department store or at your favorite boutique: Paige Premium Denim, J Brand, True Religion, Easy Money Jeans, Hudson and Miss Me....yes I do love jeans!

Happy Fourth of July, and happy summertime!

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Tuesday Tip: Nails

I'm all about painting my nails fun colors during the summer. Usually I sport my OPI Lincoln Park After Dark or anything that resembles it, but during the summer I branch out. Here are some fun finds for nails:

Crackle Nail Polish by OPI:

Essie's summer collection including bright oranges, pinks and reds...all with fun names like the one below, Braziliant:

Also, I'm loving all the different takes on the basic french manicure...use colors other than just neutral and white. Use bright colors, or have black on your tips to look trendy rather than white.

It's the summer, so treat yourself to a mani or pedi and try something new!

Tuesday Tip: Make Gel Liner Easy to Apply

I went to use my Bobbi Brown gel liner (in espresso) this morning and it was looking a little pathetic. There are just a few clumps of gel liner left in the jar, but I am bound and determined to use it all and not let any go to waste. Well, as I began to apply it I couldn't even get the product on my brush....major problem...so, it was time to figure something out to make it work, eyeliner to me is a must. What I discovered is a little trick everyone can use to make their gel liner apply smooth and perfect.

First, I cleaned my brush, you can't apply makeup with brushes that have makeup on them or are dirty. I put Neutrogena eye makeup remover on a kleenex and rubbed the brush in swirl motions on the kleenex to remove the product, you wouldn't believe the amount of gel liner that was on the brush (yuck!). Next I used my perfectly clean brush to apply the liner, I realized that by having a little bit of eye makeup remover on the brush it helped break down the gel liner that has dried out some with time. My liner went on in a perfect line thanks to my brush being clean so there were no clumps of product on it and it went on easily since the eye makeup remover made it more of a liquid consistency.

Try this trick out if you have gel liner that is drying out or is a dry consistency. I know that Bobbi Brown and Maybelline's gel liner is great but a drier consistency than MAC's liner.

Tuesday Tip: Traveling

Packing for trips and traveling can be such a hassel. Especiallly when it comes to flying and making sure your items are 3 ounces or less and fit into a quart size bag, and then there's the fact that your items in your checked bag end up opening or exploding sometimes, so they all have to be in ziploc bags. I feel like a bag lady by the time I pack all of my items for a trip. Here are a few things I do to keep my cosmetic items to a minimum so that I can fit everything I need in my carry on and suitcase that I need, but not be weighted down by bottles and jars...

Try out sample size products or items you get from a gift (at a cosmetics line) on your trip. I have tons of sample size face creams, eye creams, eye makeup removers, etc...before I go on a trip I get out my sample size products and see which will work for me...sometimes this leads to me discovering a new great product!

Buy travel size products. So many people carry around full size products because they think that travel size products by that brand are not made....most lines sell items in travel size. Walmart and Target have lots of options, and so do Ulta and Sephora...so you are bound to find a brand that suits your beauty needs.

Buy or reuse small jars and bottles...I am all about refilling travel size shampoo bottles with more shampoo. I'm sure many of you already do this. Another thing I do is I reuse sample size pots and jars for my moisturizers, face creams, face wash, etc. This way instead of bringing my huge Neutrogena face wash I bring a less than 1 once jar with enough for my weekend trip. If you want to purchase travel size bottles Ulta has a set of 4 that are bright colors and fit into the requirements for air travel. Also, Sally Beauty Supply is full of bottles and jars that can be used for travel.

Make it work...before I travel I think through what I REALLY need...I'm a makeup artist, so I tend to think I need everything, but I've come to terms and I don't need all of my makeup on a trip. Think through your makeup, bring what you wear everyday and then one extra eyeshadow for night time, or a different lipstick. You don't need a multitude of makeup products. Also, think about the skin care products you are bringing. In my everyday life I use a daytime moisturizer, night cream and eye cream. When I go on trips I usually just bring my daytime moisturizer and eye cream...I ditch the night cream for a few days. Think about what you can leave behind for a few days so that you have less to pack.

Tuesday Tip: Love Liquid Eyeliner

There is something I just love about liquid eyeliner....it has such a clean and glamourous look to it. It is not the thing to wear if you plan to shed a tear (does anyone remember Lauren Conrad's tear shedding moment on The Hills with liquid eyeliner running down her cheek?). Well, here are a two of my favorite brands of liquid eyeliners for those moments you want to look fabulous and you know that you don't need a waterproof product.

Prestige This is a good basic liquid eyeliner that you can't go wrong with.

e.l.f. This only costs a dollar...what can be better than that?!

Remember, you only need to (and should in my opinion) line your top lashline with liquid liner, not your lower. Also, it comes in different shades, so experiment...if you feel like black is too harsh try a midnight blue or a plum!

Tuesday Tip: Be a Beach Beauty

I'm heading to the beach, which is my favorite place, this month and I cannot wait! Here are some things to remember when doing makeup for a day at the beach...

First, you are at the beach, so don't get too made up! Just put on a little to give yourself a glow. Start with sunscreen, and remember you need to reapply this! You do not want to burn or get wrinkles before you must. When it comes to makeup skip the foundation unless it's waterproof and you feel it is neccessary. Apply concealer under your eyes to cover dark circles and to any trouble spots. Powder and add a little blush or bronzer. Personally, I like to skip any major eye makeup and only put on a little bit of waterproof mascara to make my eyes stand out a little. Apply a sheer colored gloss or tinted chapstick and you are good to go! You can do as little of this or as much as you wish, but as I said at first, don't get carried away with makeup at the beach.....you want to look like a natural beach beauty!

Tuesday Tip: Change Your Foundation Color

It's almost summertime and I have already switched to my darker foundation for the summer....not because I'm tanned, but because I feel like my skin needs more of a glow. I am of course bronzing my neck and chest to blend this new slightly darker shade. I think that changing your foundation color twice a year is a must. In the winter you don't need to have a darker foundation, you need to match your skin. I embrace my "Snow White Complex" (as my manager at Armani called it) during the winter months. I play up the lighter skin, dark lips and dark hair. During the summer though I'm ready to look bronzed and dewey with peach toned cheeks and glossy lips. So, when you go foundation shopping in May or June go just barely darker than your normal shade so that your face will match your bronzed skin you'll have after being out in the sun. A couple of ways to change up your foundation color without buying a new foundation shade is to mix in a liquid bronzer with your foundation, or use a powder bronzer on top to add a glow.

Tuesday Tip: Lovely Lips

Lip color is such a fun and easy thing to change up depending on the day and your mood. I find when I do makeup that a lot of people don't wear lipstick and stick to a neutral gloss or chapstick...there is no need to be afraid of lipstick or adding color to your lips! Here are a few things to know about when it comes to making your lips look lovely...

If you have small lips use a neutral or lighter color and gloss, if you do a dark color your lips will appear smaller. Don't feel like you can never wear a dark color, now you just know the effect it will have on your lips.

Lipsticks come in many different textures....a lot of people steer clear of lipstick because they assume it is heavy and something people wore twenty years ago. You can find sheer lipsticks, shine, shimmer, or matte...my point, there is one out there for you!

If you want to stick with gloss at least pick one with some color to change things up.

To make your lip color, whether lipstick or gloss last longer use a lip liner first, line and fill in your lips. Choose a neutral lip liner that will match your lips so you can use it with all lipsticks you use.

My favorite lines to purchase lip products from are MAC (tons of color and texture options), Bobbi Brown (lots of great neutrals and everyday colors), Giorgio Armani (classic colors and I love their sheer and shine lipsticks), Smashbox (awesome glosses). One of my latest cheap finds is 99 cent lip gloss from Sally Beauty Supply. The glosses are mini and found right by the counter.

Tuesday Tip: Shop Sales

I will justify spending a good amount of money on makeup and skincare, but that doesn't mean I don't like to find a great deal...checking out sale items at stores like Ulta is a must! Sometimes there is a reason that a certain makeup product or nail polish is on sale...but lots of times great products go on sale to allow room for new products. I just found two great nail polish colors at Ulta on sale last week...a bright summertime red and a pinkish plum that is also perfect for spring or summer. Sale items are worth looking at because often times they are perfectly fine items that there was an overstock of, or they are limited edition items that are on sale so that the latest limited edition item can have the shelf space in the front of the store. A lot of makeup lines do limited edition palettes, lip colors, eyeshadows, etc. Most of the time they are colors that I would wear, and I find it convenient that they are in palettes, or fun that they are in cute cases rather than the normal makeup. Why not get the same quality makeup at a discount...the only problem with buying limited edition items is that once the color runs out it is gone for good, so BEFORE it runs out take it into a store and have someone help you find a similar color.

Don't neglect sale shelves, but do keep in mind that if you are questioning the color, then probably the rest of us are too and that is a sale item you do not want!

Tuesday Tip: ALWAYS Wash Your Face

Excellent skin care is equally as important as fabulous makeup. Washing your face at the end of the day is a must...keeping makeup on through the night will dry out your skin and can cause blemishes...which we don't want! If you find a face wash you love then washing your face won't be such a chore (because when you are really tired and it's late it really does seem like a chore...trust me, I know). Here are 3 of my favorite face washes, yes 3, I'm convinced that if I only use one cleanser my skin becomes immune to it and I start breaking out or becoming oily (I think it's in my head, but you never know!). All can be purchased at your local drugstore or Ulta.

Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Cream Cleanser....what's not to love, it's pink, smells like grapefruit and fights breakouts!

Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser...a gentle, basic cleanser. I feel refreshed every time I use it...and my skin really does look radiant after I use this.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Makeup Removing Cleanser...this foaming cleanser feels amazing as it dissolves away makeup.

Remember to use an alcohol free toner and moisturizer/face cream after cleansing...I think I'm going to go wash my face now that it's on my mind....and tonight's cleanser choice? Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser.

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Tuesday Tip: Excellent Exfoliator

I've gotten out of the habit of exfoliating my skin the past couple of years...I think one day I ran out of whatever I was using and failed to purchase another exfoliator. Well, I have been missing out, in a MAJOR way! I had a 15% off coupon to Sephora burning a hole in my wallet last week, so off I went, I mean who doesn't use a coupon to Sephora?! I left with new foundation and powder for my makeup kit and 2 products for myself, the dry shampoo I blogged about last week and my new favorite exfoliator by Bliss, Pore Perfecting Facial Polish. This is a very gentle scrub and after using it I feel my face glowing...really! By removing old dead skin cells on top of your skin (by scrubbing) your skin will look younger because it then has a smooth even texture and a natural glow...so, whether you go pick up my favorite exfoliator from Sephora or find one at your local drug store get in the habit of using one 2-3 mornings a week...it's something I'm getting into a habit of again!

*Remember, scrubs for your face should be VERY gentle, rougher scrubs can be used for your body. If you are using a scrub that is too harsh it can actually enlarge pores, and we want to do the opposite.

Engagement Pictures

Click here to see my best friend's engagement pictures done by Benfield Photography a couple of weeks ago. The pictures turned out great despite the crazy Oklahoma weather that day...and the makeup looks fabulous. I used my usual Make Up For Ever Face and Body Liquid Foundation. I mixed 20 and 34 (two of my most popular colors). I love how her blush turned out, especially with the pink dress she wore...I used Nars blush because of how well it shows up. I loved the quarter lashes I used on her, it was my first time to do this rather than a full strip lash or flares...I LOVED the result! I will be stocking up on these! My favorite pics are the ones in the bookstore, such a fun and creative idea!

Tuesday Tip: Have Your Best Hair Day...With Little Effort

I'm going to be honest with you (as always), I'm a busy person, and not much of a morning person. So, that means there are some mornings that I simply don't have time to wash my hair (clearly I value my sleep). I've found a little something that is a life saver, well-hair saver, on mornings like that though. Dry shampoo. I remember reading an article about it years ago and thinking wow, what a great idea! But it was impossible to find at the time. A couple years ago I picked up a bottle of TIGI's Dirty Secret. I was hooked instantly. I had figured out a great way to save time and keep my hair looking fabulous! Dry shampoo is so easy to use, you simply spray it on your roots and fluff your hair. It gives your hair a fresh look rather than a drab second day oily look. There was one problem with my discovery though, I'm brunette, and I dye my hair so that it is darker than my natural color...most dry shampoos on the market have a slight white color to them, so they work great for blondes but not so great for brunettes. I found a way to make it blend, but it took more effort than dry shampoo should. Thankfully, Bumble and Bumble has looked out for ladies with all hair colors. Try their dry shampoo, now sold at Sephora (which means I picked up a bottle of my own this evening when I was there). It comes in white, blonde, brown and black....perfect! This is a pricey product, but oh so worth it. You can use it as a substitution for washing your hair, or as a way to add some volume and life to your hair at the end of the day before going out. So, whether you are busy with your job, school, kids, or life in general and need to save a few minutes you now know how to save time and still look great!

Tuesday Tip: Wear Sunscreen

Spring is here which means warmer temperatures and if you are like me you are getting out in the warm sunny weather as much as possible. Whether you are outdoors gardening, working out, driving with the windows down, or simply going about your everyday activities you NEED to wear sunscreen on your face! Sunscreen is a must YEAR round, but I realize that most people don't wear it all the time...so, now is the time to get in the habit. You can apply a moisturizer with sunscreen in the morning, a basic sunscreen before your moisturizer, or use a foundation that has sunscreen in it. Any of those options work. Make sure you are using something with SPF 15 or higher. Not only is skin cancer a risk when out in the sun, but also wrinkles...and hello, we do not want those on our faces before they have to be there! Another issue with too much sun--sunburns, which lead to red skin and peeling...red peeling skin and you wanting your makeup to look fabulous is not the best combo. Remember, if you are going to be by a pool, at the beach or sitting outside at an event all day you need to reapply...again and again. And, don't forget to put sunscreen on your neck...and the rest of your body for that matter. Remember, playing in the sun is fun, but too much sun can burn!

Tuesday Tip: Go Country

The Academy of Country Music Awards Sunday night was full of fabulous looks (along with some amazing singing of course)...the looks were SO fabulous that I think we should all go a little country.

How cute was Taylor Swift singing "Mean" I love the softer look of her makeup.

I LOVE Rhianna's makeup...I want to meet her makeup artist! She always has a fabulous glow and I loved her deep lip color and the red shadow on her eyes. It was so fun to see her perform with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles.

Martina's eye makeup was my obsession Sunday night, I LOVE her eyeliner, it looked like she used a liquid liner to get a cat eye look without being over the top, still very classic.

Carrie Underwood is always a favorite of mine, and while some of you are probably thinking I'm crazy for posting her with pink hair it was the whole punk/rocker look that I loved. From the hair and makeup to the dress and shoes, I couldn't get enough.

Tuesday Tip: Use Art Brushes

My favorite eyeliner brushes to use with gel, cake or liquid eyeliner are from Michael's, the craft store...crazy, right?! I buy packs of very thin brushes to use when applying eyeliner. The brushes that were sold for gel liner or cake liner at counters were too thick to me, but art brushes are sold in all sizes. While I'm not going to use art brushes for all of my brushes (and I don't recommend that you do either), there are times like with eyeliner, some eye shadows and even lip liner that they come in handy! Not only are they just what is needed sometimes, but they are also a lot cheaper than "makeup" brushes. Oh, and just in case you are wondering, I'm not the only makeup artist who does this....I learned this secret from makeup artist friends...I guess the secret is out now!

Tuesday Tip: Spring into Spring!

The temperatures were in the 80's today in Tulsa and for some reason I was still dressed for fall...I needed a quick way to brighten my look, so what did I go with ?! Blush of course, it's my life saver for everything (if you haven't noticed yet) and also a cute coral for my nails. I went with one of my favorite Essie colors, Cute as a Button...because it is as cute as a button, and that is just what I needed today!!

With these warmer temperatures it's important to integrate bright colors into not only your wardrobe, but also your look. Here are a few ways (other than colorful nails)to brighten your look:

Bright pink or coral lip gloss on top of your fall or winter red lipstick. When I worked at Armani my manager and I had a lip combo we loved...the number 21 shine lipstick with a shimmery pink gloss on top (number 7). For a similar result try Smashbox lip gloss in Boundlesss or Nonstop.

Brighten a smokey eye by using a pale pink as a base color instead of a taupe and/or add plum to your crease color. I love Make Up For Ever shadows, try #88 or #97 for a soft pink, for a plum try #121 or #142.

Last, if you don't wear blush start wearing it and if you already do put more on. My NEW favorite color is Blossom by Linda Mason Elements...this line was created by the fabulous artist Linda Mason and not only am I obsessed with the packaging (how could I not be?!) but I'm also obsessed with the color and the fact that it's pigmented. Look for a blog post about my visit to her studio/gallery in NYC.

Tuesday Tip: Touch Up

Whether you are out all day or all night, touching up is a must for you to look fabulous. Do you ever wonder how the makeup artists at makeup counters look amazing all day? They touch up, trust me I was once one of them and I did, so did all of my co-workers. While certain makeup products do last longer you will most likely need to touch up to add life to your face at the end of a long day or night, so here is what I suggest to keep on hand, do one or all of these things to brighten and liven up your face...

Lip color- This is an obvious one, right? Keep a lipstick or gloss on hand so that you can touch up after eating or drinking, or after it naturally fades away, because unless you are into lip stains (which I'm not after purchasing a muave that turned bright pink on my lips....for hours) lip color won't last forever.

Pressed powder (because loose powder is messy)- Another one you've heard to do probably, although I never keep one with me. If you get oily keep one on hand, otherwise you can skip out on carrying powder.

Concealer- Carry it with you, it's small and will add so much life to your face. At the end of a long day I add a little under my eyes and to the inner corners of my eyes. Also, if you get a little redness around your nose or on your chin it is an easy touch up.

An eye product- This is up to you, I'm a fan of touching up my mascara at the end of the day, however sometimes I ditch the mascara touch up and go for adding more eyeliner if I'm meeting up with people for the evening. Even adding an extra sweep of eye shadow can make a difference, so decide what is best for you.

Blush- I'm a blush girl (if you haven't realized yet) the quickest way to add a glow to your face is to add a little pink to your cheeks.

This list may have you thinking you are going to be hovering over a mirror or going to the ladies room frequently to touch up...I'm NOT telling you to do that. I'm saying add lip color after you eat, at the end of a work day if you are heading out take 3-5 minutes to add a little more to your makeup, or if you are out for the evening do one lip or blush touch up.

Tuesday Tip: Layer for a New Look

Do you want to change your lip color without purchasing a new product, or change the tone of your blush without owning three or four....then layer it up!

Layering lip colors is something I've done since probably middle school, mostly because I was always buying makeup and even if I didn't love the lipstick I ended up with I was determined to wear it, so I'd layer colors on top. If you want your red or pink lipstick to be a little deeper apply a bronze or golden gloss or lipstick on top of your lip color.

Blush is another fun thing to change up. As we move into warmer temperatures if you want your pink blush to have a more peach tone then sweep your bronzer on top of the pink. You will end up with a golden pink rather than just a sweet pink (which I love too).

So, get creative with the colors that are already in your drawer and experiment with colors that may not be your favorite alone, but paired with something else can be the perfect combination!

Tuesday Tip: Look Like a Star

My favorite part of awards shows, like the Oscars, is seeing the fashion and makeup on the red carpet. I pay more attention to this than the actual awards show--I don't know if that is something I should admit or not! This year's red carpet at the Academy Awards definitely did not disappoint, here are three of my favorite looks:

Gwyneth Paltrow's gorgeous glow

Anne Hathaway's classic matte red lips

Scarlett Johansson's smokey eyes

You can easily look like one of these celebrities...for Gwyneth's look go for a foundation with a dewy finish and extra shimmer, play up the bronze tones. For Anne's lips go for a matte true red lipstick. For Scarlett's eyes play up the plum and gold tones for a different take on the smokey eye.

Tuesday Tip: Polished with Primer

Do you wish your foundation lasted longer or looked smoother on your skin? Are you using a primer? If not, now is the time! Primers can help control oil, make your makeup last longer, and make your pores and fine lines less visible. The primer I use in my makeup kit on clients is Smashbox Photo Finish. I use the original clear formula. Basically it glides on the skin so that the skin appears smoother and helps foundation last. Smashbox now has many different formulas so that you can have oil control, cancel redness or add a glow.

A couple other ones to check out are Laura Mercier (once again many options to match your needs) and MAC (also lots of different types).

Some people use primers everyday, other people use them when their makeup needs to look extra polished for an event...just know that primers are something worth checking out!

Tuesday Tip: Beautifully Bronzed

Winter has been here too long and with this week of warm weather my mind is fast forwarding to spring and summer and being out in the sun. During warmer months the only place I want to be is by a pool or beach soaking up the sun...of course I ALWAYS wear sunscreen and you should too.

So what's a girl to do in these last few months before fun in the sun can begin? Use a bronzer! My favorite powder bronzers are MAC's Bronzing Powder in Refined Golden (great color for most skin coloring and has a tiny hint of shimmer). Another favorite is Arbonne's Bronzer. One of my favorite cheap finds is Bonnebell's Gel Bronzer and also their Loose Glimmer Bronze.

Don't forget, in addition to bronzing your face you can use your bronzer on your neck, chest, shoulders and arms....yes, really! It looks a little strange to have a bronzed face and then the rest of your body look pale...it's all about blending! One trick I've used to bronze my arms and legs is mixing loose powder bronzer with lotion, it creates a nice glow with a hint of color.

I Left My Heart In New York

I love the energy of big cities...I especially love New York City. I love the fast pace, the fact that people are going places and getting there quickly. I love the style, the fact that you see anything and everything when you are walking the streets, shopping, or dining out. I love the inspiration I gain every time I go there. Inspiration from the city, the people, the arts and the places. I'm always on a high for weeks after visiting, that is of course after the brief low I experience from having to leave the fabulous Big Apple. Each time I visit I fall in love with the city more, and each time I leave it's harder to do that the last time. I was there during their most recent big snow with 19 inches in Central Park. Even though schools shut down for a day (which never happens there) that didn't stop me from exploring the city and having the time of my life...I will have a series of blog posts highlighting different parts of my trip to New York City, the most recent love of my life. And of course, there will be makeup tips intertwined!

Broadway

I absolutely love musicals...I've seen everything from classics to comedies to rock opera, which is how the most recent show I saw this time around is classified. American Idiot is a musical set to Green Day music, which I feel like anyone in my age range can relate to. I loved the look of the makeup...very punk. It made me want to paint my nails black (which they normally are) and smudge the eyeliner under my eyes...in a major way! To brighten the grunge look there were bright pops of color mixed into the eye makeup and lipstick and wardrobe. The girls' hair had volume rather than being flat. One of the highlights of the show was the fact that the lead singer of Green Day played one of the characters and led the closing song, Good Riddance along with the rest of the cast strumming guitars and harmonizing. This was definitely a dark musical with a realistic ending rather than a happily ever after ending...but it left me wanting more!

To get a smudged look on your eyes use a black pencil liner to line your upper and lower lashline, then smudge with a q-tip. Also line your inner rim for a dramatic effect. To soften the look of smudged black eyeliner use a plum eyeshadow on your outer lower corners.

For dark nails go for my all time favorite OPI Lincoln Park After Dark. It's a dark plum that leaves people giving your nails a second look...from afar they may look black but up close its actually plum. The best look with dark polish is short nails.

For voluminous hair use my favorite hairspray (thanks to one of my Orange County friends introducing me to it) Kenra Volume Spray. This works great to lift your roots.

More to come on my New York Adventures....just look for the title "I Left My Heart In New York!"

Tuesday Tip: Wear Waterproof

Waterproof mascara and eyeliner is a must. Let's be honest, we don't all cry everyday, but many of us do have eyes that end up watering due to cold weather, wind, or allergies. By wearing waterproof products you can ensure that your makeup will stay where it belongs rather than smudging and running under your eyes in an unattractive way. My favorite waterproof eye wear is Loreal Voluminous Mascara in waterproof and Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner (water resistant). These are two products I wear everyday. Currently Ulta has a special for buy 2 get 1 free with their Loreal products, it's the perfect time to stock up!

Remember to use an excellent eye makeup remover like Neutrogena's when removing your waterproof eyewear!

Blizzard Blues

I'm not going to lie, this Oklahoma blizzard is starting to get me down. After a foot of snow the other day I woke up from a nap today to see MORE snow falling....please, tell me how can there be more?! I beginning to feel like I'm being held hostage by snow! So, when I looked at my tired face this morning that has a lack of life from being shut in the past few days I decided I needed a pick me up...immediately!

What I needed was a little Bliss in my life. One of my favorite products for a tired looking face is the Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask by Bliss.

This is basically their spa's famous Triple Oxygen Facial Treatment in a bottle. This product has a higher price point of $52, but it will last you a long time. All you need is a pump or two. The product looks like a gel when you pump it out, spread the gel on your face, do not rub it in, it will turn to a foam over the next 2-3 minutes, then simply rinse it off with water. When you look in the mirror your skin will look brighter and tighter, which means younger! I only recommend using this in the morning or before you go out for an event...after all, why would you need to have younger looking skin when you are falling asleep, you want the world to see it!

While I know those of you who are like me, snowed in, can't make it to a Sephora right now, you can order this fabulous product online and it will give you something to look forward to...in addition to the sun shining, temperatures rising and this snowy world melting away!

Tuesday Tip: Use an Eye Cream

If you are reading this blog then you need to be using an eye cream. I started using an eye cream at age 21 and as far as I'm concerned I should have started at 20...the skin around your eyes is thinner and dryer than the rest of the skin on your face. There is more wear and tear around the eyes, just think about when you tug on your eyes to apply eye makeup or remove it, or when you just rub your eyes because you are sleepy.

Using an eye cream keeps this delicate area hydrated. By using an eye cream at a young age you will be preventing wrinkles. As you get older and see fine lines and wrinkles you can switch to a more intense cream that will reduce the appearance of those lines. No matter what your age you need an eye cream. I promise once you get in the habit of using one you'll be hooked. Here are a few great options that will moisturize (I use eye cream at night year round, but in these extra cold months I apply it in the morning as well.)

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Eye Cream (this was my first eye cream to use)

Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado (my current favorite)

Dermalogica Total Eye Care (great skin care line, can be bought at Sephora and some department stores)

When applying you only need a pea size amount, use your ring fingers to lightly apply the eye cream around your eyes. Start under the eyes and go around to the inner part of your eyebrows.

Tuesday Tip: Try a New Fragrance

I'm all about people having their signature scent...mine is Armani Code. When you have a perfume you wear often or all of the time people will think of you when they smell it...on the street, at the mall, when anyone passes them by with it. It is fun however to branch out and find new fragrances to throw in the mix. My new favorite perfume is Kate Spade's Twirl.

I was at Sephora a few weeks ago buying who knows what. I was paying and distracted with my iphone checking emails or texting when the girl behind the counter asked if I would like a sample. Usually I'm the one asking for samples because, hello, I'm a makeup artist! I was so caught off guard that SHE was asking me....so caught off guard that I was speechless and couldn't think of anything in the whole store I wanted to sample (I know, sort of embarrassing right?!). Thankfully she suggested making me a sample of Twirl to end the awkward silence. Smart thinking on her part because I'll probably be back there soon when my little sample is gone to get the full size product. Check out this fragrance and comment to let me know what some of your favorites are!

Remembering July in January

In honor of my sister's 6 month anniversary to her wonderful husband I have posted a few pictures from her wedding. I had so much fun doing her makeup for the big event. She is naturally beautiful with great skin and doesn't wear a lot of makeup on a daily basis. So, we went for a classic bridal look. She didn't want to look too made up, but wanted her skin to look flawless in pictures, and of course have a bridal glow. I think the look was achieved!

Lipstick touch up...I mixed a pink lip color with a brown undertone to add a little color to her lips without being too much. I added a touch of gloss for extra shine and shimmer.

All about the eyes...I used Make Up For Ever eyeshadows, #109 Ardelle lashes (great ones that enhance without looking over the top), Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in Espresso on top lashline and lower inner rim, and Loreal Voluminous Mascara in waterproof.

Beau-ti-ful! It's important for makeup to photograph well inside and outside.

Tuesday Tip: Bring on the Blush!

In these winter months it's easy to feel washed out or drab...so, bring on the blush! Here are a few ways to brighten your look:

1. If you feel like your skin is dry or looks dry during cold months switch to a cream or liquid blush. It will give you more of a natural and hydrated look. Try MAC's cream blush, Stila Convertible Color (can be worn on lips or cheeks), or Tarte cheek stain. You will apply this after foundation before powder. You can always add a little powder blush later if you feel like you need more color.

2. Carry your blush with you...most people keep lip products and powder with them to touch up. Start carrying your blush and a blush brush. There's nothing that adds life to your tired face like a little more cheek color. If I'm going to be out all day blush touch ups are a must!

3. Add a little more. Don't skimp on the blush...you don't want to look like a clown, but you also don't want to look washed out. Pick out a great pink tone for these winter months. I LOVE the colors Nars offers.

Tuesday Tip: Read About It

I'm going to assume that all of you are readers since you are reading my blog and probably others. Here are a few of my favorite makeup books with awesome looks and practical tips...if you want to know more about makeup- more than you read in blogs and magazines-get a book by a great artist and you'll be suprised at how much you learn and are inspired.

Kevyn Aucoin's Making Faces
This was my second makeup book (Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty being my first). It was the makeup book that made me want to BE a makeup artist...what is there to say about Kevyn Aucoin's work other than amazing. I would have loved to have met him and worked with him
.

Carmindy's Crazy Busy Beautiful
This is a recent purchase that I'm enjoying. It is full of tips which makes it an quick read and the tips are easy to apply to your life whether you wear little or a lot of makeup.

Paul Starr On Beauty

Paul Starr was a fantastic artist who had a way of making each face look flawless. This book includes different makeup looks and interviews with thirty celebrities
.

Asian Beauty by Margaret Kimura
I had the privilege to meet Margaret Kimura a few years ago. She is a wonderful person and makeup artist, this book
does not just cover outer beauty but also inner. She has a makeup school in Hollywood, MKC Beauty Academy.

I could go on and on about makeup books, but I'll save more for later!

Tuesday Tip: Dry No More!

Need a quick fix for dry lips or a dry patch of skin on your face during these harsh winter months? Look no further than your pantry for a little ingredient I keep in my makeup kit for emergencies and use on myself from time to time...sugar. Simply spray or add a few drops of water to a spoonful or small amount of sugar so you create a scrub consistency. Then use a warm washcloth to dip in the sugar and buff your lips or dry patch. When you finish removing the dry skin apply lip balm or moisturizer. This is a quick fix, so if you are looking to exfoliate multiple times a week look for a GENTLE scrub. Harsh scrubs can enlarge pores, so steer clear of anything super rough that may feel like sandpaper on your face. Makeup looks so much better on smooth skin, so give your skin a scrub!
